When you go to a restaurant and open up the menu and see zillion different names and types for pasta , one just gets confused and ends up ordering the safest choice and the most predictable choice of pasta that is macaroni or penne , so here is a guide for you next time you are in grocery shop or a restaurant and are in midst of various shapes and types of pasta to choose or try something different because a little pasta knowledge never hurt anyone !

1. Farfalle - the bow shaped pasta usually paired up in salads or small pasta plates works great with olive oil or rich sauces .

2. Fusilli - this twisted shape of pasta is best paired with thick sauces as it gets into every nook and cranny of the pasta .

3. Gnocchi - this pasta pronounced as ' noki ' is made of potato rather than semolina , has a very rich taste and usually hand made rather than machine made .

4. Lasagna - this wide flat noodle shaped pasta is best served during thanksgiving or Christmas , is very rich in taste when paired well with béchamel and marinara sauce .

6. Conchiglie - this shell shaped pasta , is best stuffed with rich sauces and cheese , the concave shape is perfect for holding in the chunky sauces .

7. Penne - the most popular and known shape of pasta , this tube shaped pasta is best paired with arrabbiata sauce .

8. Macaroni - this curvy shaped pasta is which is often paired with cheese and is made into comfort food of many that is Mac and cheese is also often used in cold pasta salads .

9. Spaghetti - this long noodle like pasta goes with any sort of sauce be it arrabbiata or olive oil or pesto .
